Check out the interview! Please note that the questions were a collaboration between myself and Mini Magoo, as she was the one who reviewed the novel.
_____
Would you rather be friends with Lily and Nisha or Francesca?
Hmm, that’s a tough question. Francesca is fun, inspiring, loyal and generous—but she’s also unpredictable and manipulative, don’t you think? And Nisha and Lily are stable and trustworthy, but a bit rigid and judgmental. I think the perfect friend might be a combination of all three girls—but as Evie figures out, there’s no such thing as the perfect friend. Even a “best” friend isn’t completely perfect!
Have you ever had adventures similar to Francesca's and Evie's?
*BLUSHES* Well, yes. When I was in seventh grade, I had a free-spirited friend who got me into some mischief. She wasn’t anything like Francesca, though, and we didn’t engage in any matchmaking. But I remember the tension our friendship caused with my other friends. I think it’s sometimes so hard for girls this age to navigate between friendships.
What was the most important message that you were trying to convey in your novel?
That it’s a great thing to get out of your comfort zone. Sometimes girls in middle school feel as if they have to behave a certain way—or else they’ll face social rejection. Every girl should feel free to express herself and explore new friendships.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently revising my next novel for tweens, TRAUMA QUEEN, which will be published by Aladdin MIX/Simon & Schuster next spring. It’s about a girl with the most embarrassing mom ever.
What advice would you give to any aspiring young writers?
Read for pleasure. And never fall in love with your first draft!
